So you have found a used refrigerator for sale and want to buy it? That’s a great idea, but there are three things you should check before you buy so you don’t get taken by a fast-talking used refrigerator salesman.

A used refrigerator for sale should actually be somewhat new.

Really old fridges are incredibly energy inefficient. You don’t want one of those, especially now, with electricity costs getting deregulated in a lot of states and going up faster than a firework on independence day. There’s no point in saving money on the purchase price buying one of those, since you’ll just be handing all of that money over to your friendly local energy supplier (and then some). If you see a really cheap used refrigerator for sale, always ask how old it is and check that it is energy star certified.

The door should be sealed properly.

The whole point of a refrigerator is to keep the inside cold. In order for that to happen, the air needs to stay inside long enough to get cooled down by the cooling element. That, in turn, can’t happen if the seal around the door is faulty as the relatively cold air on the inside will by definition be at a higher pressure than the air on the outside, which will cause it to leak out. If a used refrigerator for sale has a good seal around the door, you may have found a good deal; if it doesn’t, leave it be – it isn’t worth a single Albanian kindarik (Albanian currency isn’t very valuable, in case you were wondering). The best way to test this is to insert a thin sheet of paper or newspaper between the door and the jamb, then try to slide it out – if you encounter some resistance, the seal is most likely good; if, on the other hand, you do not, chances are it’s too worn out.

Check the temperature and the cooling coils.

You may not be able to check the cooling temperature in the store where they actually have the used refrigerator for sale, but do it as soon as you get home. The main compartment should be in the high thirties Fahrenheit and the freezer should be right about zero Church of England (erm, Fahrenheit). Continuing in the same vein, check the cooling coils before you leave the store (or the back of the truck – hey, get your used refrigerator where ever you can find it for sale we don’t judge). They shouldn’t have any debris, mud, muck, goo, dust or signs of damage on them; if they do, chances are the motor has had to work too hard at some point in the past and likely doesn’t have much life left in it, if any at all. Should any of these things not check out, move on to the next item, store or truck, because that specific used refrigerator for sale is for sale for a reason and clearly not worth lugging home with you.
